Sustainable seafood restaurants are becoming increasingly popular with consumers who wish to take a credible stand on Sustainability issues and minimise their environmental footprint.
How are restaurants keeping up with Sustainability trends?
By sourcing their seafood from certified suppliers, restaurants and other food outlets can ensure not only the traceability of the products that they are selling but also that Sustainable restaurant practices are contributing to the Sustainability and environmental impact of their operations.

By joining the Sustainable Restaurant Programme your restaurant will:
- Raise awareness of responsible consumption among clients;
- Take a credible stand on sustainability issues;
- Benefit from the visibility provided by Friend of the Sea.
The member restaurants will be added to:
- Our Mobile App dedicated to the project;
- Our website friendofthesea.org;
- Our co-marketing and communication activities.
Member restaurants will also receive gadgets and personalised marketing material.
In order to join the project, restaurants can choose between two options:
a) BASIC OPTION
This option is dedicated to the restaurants using at least one Friend of the Sea® certified seafood product.
b) GOLD OPTION
Member restaurants will be offered an additional opportunity: they receive the Friend of the Sea certificate for the entire facility, after passing an audit to verify compliance with the following Friend of the Sea® Sustainable Restaurant Chain Criteria.

The Standard for Sustainable Seafood Restaurant
Friend of the Sea criteria for Sustainable Restaurant Certification require:
- Over 90% of served seafood (weight or number of species) from certified suppliers ;
- Over 60% of served seafood (weight or number of species) from either Friend of the Sea or Global Gap certified suppliers;
- Detailed identification of the origin of products;
- Specific traceability system;
- Social accountability.

- All the information will be kept strictly confidential and implies NO commitment from your company.
- The Friend of the Sea certification is voluntary and NOT mandatory to gain access to markets.
- The application process is NOT discriminatory on size, scale, management, minimum number of operators and number of vessels involved. Nonetheless, enhanced fisheries and enhancement activities, regarding wild catches, cannot apply for certification.
- Friend of the Sea is a NGO and it strives to make participation in the audits affordable for all companies.
