Sustainable Ports
Friend of the Sea’s Sustainable shipping and cruise line standard is best implemented when Certified Ships dock at Certified Sustainable Ports.
The Sustainable ports standard aims to enhance environmentally conscious operations globally, extending Sustainable shipping practices to port operations. Ports are increasingly focusing on reducing environmental impact, including minimising emissions, managing waste, preventing invasive species, and promoting responsible handling of materials.
Why Sustainable Ports?
The maritime port industry is responding to calls for more environmentally conscious practices. Efforts are underway to develop guidelines and standards to reduce the carbon footprint of sea transportation. Despite significant advances in greener technologies, identifying the cleanest ports remains challenging due to varying regulations and strategies. Friend of the Sea has introduced a certification standard to enhance port managers’ ability to protect marine environments through conservation projects and collaborations with stakeholders.
The Standard for Sustainable Ports
Friend of the Sea criteria for sustainable shipping require:
- Environmental Leadership;
- Adopting conservation and biodiversity projects;
- Waste Management, Greenhouse Gases and Air Pollutants prevention;
- Social accountability;
- Legal compliance.
